To degrease a surface before painting, first remove dust and dirt with a dry cloth or brush. Then, wipe the surface with a damp sponge and a detergent (such as soapy water) or a special degreaser (white spirit, acetone, or isopropyl alcohol). Then, wipe the surface dry with a clean, lint-free cloth. This will improve paint adhesion and prevent defects. Work in a ventilated area and wear gloves.
To fill a wooden surface for painting, use acrylic filler (for water-based paints) or solvent-based filler (for oil-based and alkyd paints). Acrylic filler is environmentally friendly, sands easily, and does not shrink, while solvent-based filler is stronger and suitable for outdoor use. Apply a thin layer with a spatula. After drying (2-12 hours), sand smooth with 120-220 grit sandpaper and remove dust before priming. For larger cracks, epoxy filler is suitable.
After applying oil, allow the surface to dry completely (usually 24-48 hours, depending on the layers and conditions). Then carefully inspect the surface for defects. If necessary, lightly sand with fine-grit sandpaper (320-400) to remove any imperfections or dust. Wipe with a dry, soft cloth or a slightly damp sponge to remove dust. For protection and shine, you can apply a coat of clear varnish or wax (if the surface is decorative). Avoid moisture and heavy loads for the first 7-10 days.
